ART DECO FIREPLACE

This exquisite fireplace was rescued from the Philadelphia Savings Funding Society’s grand Greco-Roman revival building located at 7th and Walnut in Philadelphia. The building had many famous Philadelphian architects associated with the building, most notably Addison Hutton and Frank Furness. The fireplace was constructed out of Red Balmoral marble shipped all the way from Finland. The fireplaces’ clean and simple lines were indicative of the Art Deco style. The interior renovations were done in the 1920s by the firm Meilor, Meigs and Howe. The firm worked on the building during the years 1927 to 1931. George Howe would later team with William Lescaze on the landmark PSFS building at 12th and Market helping to usher in the International style of architecture.

The fireplace has a 9’ long 15” deep and 6” tall beveled mantel top and a grand arch as a support. The large diamond shaped keystone brings the arches 8 stones together for 9 total stones. The diamond shape also evokes the Art Deco style of the time. The fireplace is only one of two ever made the other is still installed in the bank. This great piece would be the crowning touch to a large elegant den or library or even a large family or great room.
