Salvaging a Part of the Philadelphia Fire Department’s History
The Gargoyles of the Race Street Firehouse
The Race Street Firehouse, built in 1925 and the former headquarters of the Philadelphia Fire Department, is scheduled to be demolished to make way for the expansion of the Philadelphia Convention Center. Much of architectural details of the building, including all of the gargoyles, pilasters, coats of arms and other ornaments, will either be incorporated into an exhibit in the new convention center or displayed elsewhere locally, including possibly the Philadelphia Fireman’s Hall Museum.
